Selective Mutism Treatment

A friend of mine, a kindergarten teacher, asked me for some suggestions how to approach a student with a selective mutism.First of all we have to know that Selective Mutism, known also as elective mutism, usually happens during childhood, often before a child is 5 years old. A kid with selective mutism can speak but chooses not to speak in certain situations. Failure to speak is not due to a lack of knowledge or comfort with the spoken language, also not due to a communication disorder (e.g., stuttering) but, due to an anxiety, social phobia, excessive shyness, fear of social embarrassment, social isolation and withdrawal.Selective mutism is described in the 2000 edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV-TR: pp.125-127).A silent child after being diagnosed with a selective mutism should be seen and treated simultaneously by professionals: speech-language pathologist (SLP), psychologist or psychiatrist along with teachers and the family members.It is important to gather all background history, a health report, hearing screening, oral-motor examination, educational review, parent/caregiver interview and a speech and language evaluation. Why you may fail when using affirmations I have enjoyed ongoing success writing and using affirmations and last week when I was asked what it is I do to ensure they work I had to stop and think a while in my usual introvert way that I do! After a couple of days I was able to pinpoint three things I always do when using affirmations to ensure I succeed and they may give you an insight into why you may fail when using affirmations if you find they never work for you:Write them downYou absolutely have to write your affirmations down and keep them some place where you will see them often. It is easy to think you can remember them and repeat them but if you are tackling different parts of your life using affirmations then writing them down becomes crucial.I have a small note book that I use – it is just a very cheap mini notepad – I think I bought a pack of 10 or something. I have them around and I write my finished affirmation in them. Once I feel as if I am complete using one affirmation I rip it out and I keep adding new ones and ripping out old ones until the notepad is empty.Keep repeating themYou absolutely have to keep repeating your affirmations at different times of the day. 5 Negative statements that will limit your ability to build self confidence

In the past one of the things I did to myself was to put myself down. One day I realized that continually repeating negative statements about myself would do nothing in helping me build self confidence. For some reason I actually found it easier to focus on what I did wrong or what wasn’t working than I did about anything that went right. As you build self confidence there will be limiting beliefs that you have, which will stop you and I remember using seven negative statements that are particularly harsh.
