The crude art of teaching girls who just turned 18

A couple of governesses I have met in literature live an emotionally sadistic childhood, a boring adolescent period, and a moderately interesting lovelife. Still, they remain fascinating in their own utterly drab way (to me, at least). They are fascinating in the sense that they are neither servant nor a part of the family and yet they hold the important key to ensure their charges are equipped with far more superior knowledge than those learning under a structured school system.Despite their way of life, governesses are, in essence, teachers. And that makes them doubly fascinating to me, especially since I hold the teaching profession in great respect. Continue reading

5 Tips to Building Self Esteem || with Sarah Johnson

5 Tips to Building Self Esteem “You yourself, as much as anybody in the entire universe, deserve your love and affection.” ― Buddha “The worst loneliness is to not be comfortable with yourself.” ― Mark Twain “Everything that happens to you is a reflection of what you believe about yourself. We cannot outperform our level of self-esteem. We cannot draw to ourselves more than we think we are worth.” ― Iyanla Vanzant The lack of positive self-esteem has its origins when we are young, prior to the age of six. It begins with someone saying or doing something that causes a child to get the idea that he or she is unlovable, unworthy, imperfect, or defective in some significant way.Whether it’s a parent’s unkind words, a bullying incident at school, or just being ridiculed by a peer or love one, the child internalizes these experiences and begins to believe there is something wrong with them. They then scan for evidence to “prove” to themselves that their initial fear was correct…and, of course, they find plenty of episodes that reinforce that there is something defective about who they are as a person. As time progresses, they amass a great amount of evidence that they are imperfect, unlovable, and not worthy of all the good things life has to offer Continue reading

3 Easy Ways to Build Self-Esteem in Toddlers | The Stir

Though the individual days of parenting small children can seem oh so very long, the time we really have with our children as children races by at a mind-numbing speed. One minute we’re worrying if they’re ever going to take their first steps, and the next they’re dancing around, singing along with Taylor Swift about how they’re never, ever, ever getting back together with some guy at the top of their 4-year-old lungs, causing their mother to flash-forward to the dating years with panic. So when I step back and think about the most important qualities I want to try to help instill in my children during this brief period I have raising them, there’s one thing that constantly comes to the top of my list — self-esteem. Especially when we may feel that our own self-esteem is not always the strongest? Continue reading
