Statewide initiative aims to help at-risk girls | StAugustine.com

Susan Remmer-Ryzewic remembered being a young girl with growing pains and how a teacher reached out to help.It was an act of kindness that she said changed the course of her life.“Girls need people to step up and make that difference in their lives as they struggle with the harsh realities of the world,” said Remmer-Ryzewic, president and CEO of Ponte Vedra Beach-based EHR Investments Inc.That’s why Remmer-Ryzewic and her sisters organized the First Coast Girls Initiative in 2001 to advocate for at-risk girls. It’s why she recently helped launch a new statewide initiative, Voices for Florida Girls, designed to bring to the forefront and find solutions for issues that inhibit at-risk girls from reaching their potential. In June she told her childhood story at the kickoff, which brought together about 50 area civic and business leaders. They are now spreading the word about the initiative via networking and their Facebook pages, among other things. The next step is to get people to join the process, in which they will first learn the obstacles that face girls today and the “best practices” intervention programs available to help them, said Linda Alexionok. She is director of Voices for Florida, the nonprofit leading the charge, and executive director of The Children’s Campaign, a Florida watchdog group. After the “know” period, residents will share the information they learned with their community, civic and church groups; help the nonprofit get area-wide discussions going about programs and funding; and provide grassroots leadership to get them implemented, Alexionok said.At-risk girls are the focus because 33 percent of the referrals to the juvenile justice system are girls, but there is a “disparity of services” for them, with only 5 percent of resources directed to their needs, Alexionok said Continue reading

Building Teams and Confidences | HepsTrack.com

Building Teams and ConfidencesTrack and field often heralds the individual superstar who sets records every time they enter the athletics facility.  We do that – it is exciting news to cover and share.  But our sport is more than just those superstars.  There is a team aspect to our sport that goes beyond teaming up with three others for a relay.  Unfortunately, this is often dropped out of focus once the conference meets are done in early May every year, as it is the superfast or superstrong who advance to further competitions.A team is made up of many athletes of various talents and interests.  All of these athletes are expected to contribute when it is their turn.   And they do, whether it be as the sole representative out in the throwing fields or multi-event series, or the non-anchor leg of a relay team.  They rise up and help out the team as called.  They may not always get the accolades they deserve while in college, but these athletes are typically the ones who come back to the sport and find a new way to serve within it.Gaby Grebski is such an athlete.Gabriela “Gaby” Grebski (Y’ 93) competed for the Bulldogs as a mid-distance runner who happened to do cross country in the fall months.  She was strongest as an 800m runner, where her personal highlight was winning the 800m in the Harvard-Yale/Oxford-Cambridge dual in 1991 in 2:15.7 (Harvard-Yale won, 117.5 to 79.5).  Although she struggled with injuries during her college career, she was a key member for both the 4×400 and 4×800 relay teams, and a top-5 scorer on the cross country team.  The inset image above shows Gaby competing her relay leg in the 1992 Yale Invitational.Nowadays, Gaby has found success both in and around the sport Continue reading

Building Self-Esteem in Girls Through Education

Self-esteem in girls peaks at about age nine, and then it tanks from there. Sobering right? Yeah, I pretty much feel like a #fail parent.I want my daughter to feel fulfilled, to know how to shine in her own skin. This requires self-esteem, and I wholeheartedly believe that education is one of the foundational pieces of building self-esteem in girls.Education provides you with opportunities. Education teaches you about other cultures.Education helps you discover what makes you sparkle inside. Continue reading

Richmond's Self Esteem and Confidence … – Virginia Rainbow

On February 16th, Erin Wilder, Worthy Advisor of Richmond #10, hosted a self esteem and confidence building party at her house. There were a lot of girls there and all of us wrote on a piece of paper of what we like and dislike about ourselves. Everyone complimented one another on their dislikes because that is what friendship is all about. We were shown videos of women being ‘perfected’ by makeup and computers and how that image of beauty is distorted Continue reading

Building Self Confidence- The Ugly Duckling: Self Confidence – The …

For years lower self esteem and confidence is something that I have fought with for years. What causes the lack of self confidence?I have been searching and trying to find this out for sometime, but it is all about facing your demons head on, reprogramming your mind, and seeing yourself differently. It does take time to change the way you think, and finally feel good about yourself and being comfortable in your skin. To build your self confidence is like climbing up a wall, and everytime you get to the top you fall back down again. When I first heard the story of the “The Ugly Duckling” I remember thinking, this is me. I never felt like I fitted in, I found it hard to make friends and to feel good about myself. I remember a girl at Primary School called Sherie and she was popular with the girls and the boys all fancied her and she was super pretty.I remember watching how she would just talk to the boys and other girls would follow her.I would daydream about wishing that, that was me I was the person everybody wanted to play with and be friends with. However now being a lot older and reprogramming my mind and facing the caused to the self confidence face on and learning about myself, journalling help, and learning about fitness, health and food, and learning to accept myself I now don’t have so much fears about myself.I do still have bad days but I know how to deal with this now, and how to make myself come out of this hole and look forward and feel good about myself again. How do you reprogram your mind?First of all as stated above, it is about facing your demons head on, and looking into things you dislike about yourself deeper than before; what is really causing you to feel self conscious, and your fears that prevent you from being happy with yourself?Mine was feelings of regret and not taken the opportunities I had been given to me, such as if I had carried on stewarding, training with the Fulham Ladies and carried playing football at school I would be in an amazing career in the industry and sport I loved and be happy. As a child not being about to join in with the other kids because I saw this a doing bungee jump, worst thing in the world, feeling ugly, the odd one out and not knowing why I was here. Now from all that I have learnt through experience and going through everything in my life up this point now, I see that perhaps I had to go through some of those challenges to get where I am now.Seeing my regrets I had now about the opportunities I felt in the past that I missed out on, I now put into perspective of why I hadn’t ceased those opportunities, because I know that I wouldn’t have been ready to coach people and teach others. I hadn’t learnt what I needed to. Continue reading
