Building self-confidence | Jerry R Mitchell's Blog

Last week as I was networking with several entrepreneurs at a local restaurant the theme song from the “Rocky” movie was being played.  I foolishly told every one that I worked out to that song.  After explaining my past boxing career and how it helped me to build my confidence I thought I could finish my meal in peace. The entrepreneurs wanted more questions answered and as I discussed self-confidence and how one built it an idea for an article flashed before my eyes.We learned it as a little kid-home-court advantage; it’s nothing to be taken lightly.  Maybe you got your first taste of it at a piano recital or an elementary school sporting event, where the place was packed with your supporters.  Just about everyone but the family dog was there, plus a couple of neighbors, and you knew that a bunch of the other kids’ parents were rooting for you too.  So how could you lose?  How could you do anything but perform at your very best under those circumstances?Consider the opposite situation.  It’s the Chicago vs. New York boxing championships.  I’m expected to have a tooth-and-nail battle with the New York champion, and I’m in his city.  Chicago and his have a long history of ethnic clashes and the like (Irish VS Italian).  And since cultural niceties in New York don’t include restraining oneself when expressing political and cultural preferences, every time I come out of my corner, the crowd boos, shouts and curses me-to the point where a riot seems inevitable.  It continues through each round, a situation that’s hardly conducive to success, right?  How could anyone expect you to succeed in an adversarial environment like that?Recent psychological research has shown that as comforting as it might have been to have your grandmother at your side during that solo that really isn’t the way to produce the top performance.  In fact, hostile audiences can actually bring out your best.Research psychologists have studied skilled performances and what happens when you have hostile strangers or family and friends in the audience. Common sense dictates that you’d obviously do better in front of the supportive audience and you’d probably also think that the effect would be more pronounced with a high- skill task than with a low-skill task.  In fact, research indicates the opposite, so even though the people who had the support of friends during their task experienced less stress than those who had to perform in front of hostile strangers, the second group produced better performances and got through the task faster.  Talk about turning a negative into a positive.Explanations for those results suggest that perhaps when you face a crowd of friendly faces, you might simply choke from the pressure of trying to please them.  When you face a hostile crowd, though, you might feel that you have nothing to lose, so you take risks that pay off in better performance.  Some people can simply draw on the negative energy generated by the hostile crowd, harnessing it to produce better results. On the day of the competition I felt that I was in the middle of the arena awaiting the emperor’s sign to decide my fate.  It’s not quite that dramatic or quite that hostile, but I sure was not in the thick of things with my best friends.  The crowd might not behave by throwing chairs at me, but if words and looks could kill, I would be pushing up daisies.I didn’t let it get under my skin, however, and to throw the hostile audience a curve, I politely smiled, bowed and waved to the spectators before ripping a combination of punches to their champion in a way that left even me stunned.  I acted as if I did it every day, sometimes maybe even before breakfast, and they go silent.  They don’t know quite what to make of me.  On the other hand, I knew that I had a secret, how to use their hostility for my good.  I also knew that the moment was mine, so instead of putting on a boxing exhibition I went for the knockout.  I’m definitely in the zone.I figure I may as well go for it, so I pulled out all the stops.  By the time the contest was over, I had the fans’ hero on the floor, and even though they may still hate my guts, I’ve not only won the contest, but I’ve also used their hostility to help me do it.  This time when I smiled and bowed, I knew that I really owed them a lot, even if they don’t have a clue that they helped me beat their champion.  Neat trick. In my entrepreneurial life often times I was in hostile territory. Starting new industries requires thick skin because everyone keeps telling you that what you want to accomplish is impossible.Share and Enjoy: These icons link to social bookmarking sites where readers can share and discover new web pages Continue reading

Self Confidence, Relationships and Career Success | Bud Bilanich

I saw a quote on Brian Tracy’s website the other day.  “Self-esteem is like a difficult-to-cultivate flower. It requires frequent nurturing that occurs when you keep your word and follow through on your promises.” I like this idea.  It marries up two of the topics I preach to my career success coaching clients: self-confidence and relationship building. Tweet 132 in my career advice book Success Tweets says, “Trust is the glue that holds relationships together.  The more you demonstrate trust in others, the more they will trust you.” A strong network of colleagues and friends can book your self-confidence.  And in my opinion, building the relationships that will help you create a strong network comes down to two words: trust and abundance. When you trust others you are willing to put yourself out there – to give with no expectation of return, to act in a non quid pro quo manner.  A while back, I did a blog post in which I mentioned a chapter I wrote in 42 Rules for Creating WE called, “There is no quid pro in WE”.  In that post, I pointed out that while there is nothing wrong with returning the favor when someone does you a good turn, waiting for others to help you is not a good idea when it comes to building relationships.  Successful people are willing to put themselves out there – to pay it forward. Paying it forward takes trust, but it is great career advice.  Trust yourself to do for others with no guarantee of return.  Trust that others won’t take advantage of you.  Trust in the universe in that the good you put out will come back to you in unexpected ways.  Trust is the glue that holds relationships together.  The more you demonstrate trust in others, the more they will trust you Continue reading

Just Getting Things Done is not “Productivity”

March 19, 2012 in Collaborative Change, Empowerment, Leadership, Personal PowerProductivity needs a new definition. While people are running around busier than ever, I’ve noticed that I also hear people saying things like, “I never have enough time”, I can’t make time to relax” or that they “never seem to get done what needs to be done”. Then when I ask them if they have a business plan or what is their strategy or vision, it is not uncommon to hear that they “don’t have time to stop and reflect”. So essentially, they keep throwing “stuff” up against the wall and hope that it sticks. Continue reading
