a parent’s unconditional love triumphs all

Unconditional Love : When you interact with your child in a loving, non-judgmental and patient way, they consistently feel that they are “good”.When you are harsh, short-tempered or hard to please, they consistently label themselves as “bad.”Strong parental love comes from overall interactions with your child where the outcome is consistently the child thinking, “I’m good”.It is so important to have your child believe that they are “good” after every interaction, even when there is an issue or problem to work through. The child feeling that they are “good” depends on the type of love we offer them in easy times as well as harder times. You can still be firm and have consequences, but the tones we use, the listening we give and the validations we offer show them that they are lovable and valuable to us. When there is sadness or a problem: focus on the feeling first, then you can tackle the behavior.Make sure that as the parent, you have dealt with your own emotion with the problem before addressing it with your child. You must be calm and in control to be of any help at all.If a parent’s anger is too strong when a child makes a mistake, the child will learn to be extra mean and harsh to themselves and to others when he does something wrong Continue reading

Posted on 26 April 2013.CONTRIBUTED BY HEATHER GELORMINEWhen I was pregnant with my daughter, I was given a magnet for my refrigerator. It was a list of ways to promote self-esteem in a military child, and at the time I thought, “Well, this is silly. How High Self-Esteem Can Guide Your Child to a Great Education …

Children with high self-esteem frequently perform better academically than kids with low self-esteem. Some experts believe that low self-esteem leads a child to think, “Why bother? I can’t do anything right, so why even try to be a good student?” Others believe that low self-esteem leads to depression, which can drain children of energy and vitality needed to do well in school. The good news is that parents can do much to improve kids self-image in a few easy steps.Monitor and verbally respond to children’s behaviorThis doesn’t mean you need to watch the kids closely every moment, but you should generally supervise them throughout the day. When they do something well, such as cleaning their rooms or refusing to be drawn into an argument with a sibling, praise them for it. Reinforcement will encourage kids to continue practicing the good behavior and build esteem in having positive actions noted and complimented Continue reading
