Hey Look, More Thoughts on Bike Lanes

You’d think by now I’d have hashed this through.First and foremost I need to issue an apology to the Association for Bicycle Commuting in Red Deer. In my last post I called them myopic. In hindsight, that was an unfair assertion by me because at the end of the day, the Association didn’t go out and paint the lanes on the road by themselves. As has been pointed out – and I did know this but my crankiness got in the way – the bike lanes are the work of a huge planning group that the Association is a part of.So John, Steven, Grant and the rest of the committee, please accept my apologies for throwing you under the metaphorical bus. There is a bigger issue at stake here, beyond whether or not I like the 40Ave bike lane (my stance on the lane itself hasn’t changed). Two days ago in the Red Deer Advocate, former Councillor Vesna Higham wrote that the bike lanes will be a disaster because parents like her need to drive their kids to school at Lindsay Thurber.Therein lies the crux of the problem. The power of story – Counseling Today

Counselors use narrative techniques to co-author connections, draw out client strengths and ‘rewrite’ personal historiesStacy Notaras MurphyWrite what you know. This classic adage from creative writing class has launched many a novel. According to those who practice narrative therapy, it also can launch a counseling client into a transformative and healing process of self-reflection.Narrative therapy refers to the work most often attributed to Michael White and David Epston. The approach emphasizes a person’s life stories and considers problems to be created out of different contexts, not as the result of who the person is. Continue reading

Eat to Compete!: How I Had Success Using My Mental Game

It was when I started working down at IMG Training Academy in the summer of 2009 that I was first introduced to the area of sports psychology, or mental conditioning. As a runner for many years, it was an area I had never heard of, but that made complete sense. [Ever heard the term, “Running is 90% mental”?] According to the Association for Applied Sport Psychology (AASP), sports psychologists help enhance sport performance in a number of ways, such as by: reducing performance anxiety, improving concentration, building self-confidence, and increasing and maintaining motivation. A roller coaster of experiences and moodsBy Ilma on Jun 23, 2012 in Featured, Interns’ blogAfter having finished with the national citizens’ consultation I was feeling rather motivated and optimistic about the future of EU enlargement. Having met a lot of active and well-informed citizens of Slovenia during my stay here I can only say my hopes went up.House of Europe in LjubljanaI have specifically requested to visit any kind of Bosnian association or organisation during my stay in Ljubljana. My wish was granted and I have visited Bošnjaška kulturna zveza – a kind of umbrella organisation for every association dealing with Bosnia and Herzegovina, i.e. Bosnia and Herzegovina-Slovenia Friendship Association. I have been introduced to a set of cultural and educational activities presented by Bošnjaška kulturna zveza. As an association and as individuals they support EU enlargement to the Western Balkans Continue reading

For the graduates

It’s April 1st, better known as April Fool’s Day, a holiday that has never been a particular favorite of mine. I can pull a prank, sure- and even take one with relative grace- but somehow covering a floor with small cups of water, fitting tape over a toothbrush, or calling random numbers to ask if the recipient’s refrigerator is running has never seemed to be the height of comedy to me. Then again, with pop culture producing such gems this year as the movie Jack and Jill and a resuscitated version of the television show Punk’d, maybe I should just be thankful that things aren’t worse.
